Second Prize in Trip Fiction Sense of Place Competition

I was delighted to discover last week that I had come second in a writing competition which 400 people from 35 countries entered. The remit was to write a piece of fiction or non-fiction under 3000 words that had a strong sense of place.

I decided to dig out old diaries and photo albums and over many weeks, chose a place that was significant to me starting with every letter of the alphabet (this took some thinking!) and proceeded to write non-chronological vignettes of my life. I found this really satisfying to write, and sometimes also difficult as some more challenging memories surfaced.

If you don’t know Trip Fiction, they are a fabulous online resource, providing suggestions for books set in different locations the world over, and much more besides.
