Once a week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields from Friday Fictioneers provides a photo and invites anyone up for the challenge to write a complete short piece of fiction of 100 words inspired by the picture. This is a task of precision; of making each word count. It’s great fun! Why not have a go at the next one? Here’s my response to the above picture. I’d love to know what you think of it. Does it work? And if not, why not? I’m always looking for ways to become a better writer.
Leafy Abundance and Loneliness
The whole house was like that – reclaimed by the earth – so why did the greenhouse affect me so much? Was it the smell; the heady profusion of leafy abundance and loneliness twisting around each creeping vine?
The coroner said he’d been dead several months, no next of kin. The policewoman knocked on doors, asking could anyone shed more light on him. But it wasn’t till I visited the house, entered the greenhouse, that I cried hot tears of guilt. I knew an elderly man lived there alone, but I’d never looked in on him. I didn’t even know his name.
Hard not to feel guilt though no fault of her own!
Nicely done.
Love this!Beautiful!
Dear Rebecca,
Touching story. True to life and believable.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you so much Renita, Dale & Rochelle for reading my story. Happy you liked it 🙂
That could happen to all of us. It’s a sad time that robs us of knowing our neighbors.
Absolutely Linda, I think each and every one of us could be in that situation couldn’t we. Thanks for reading.
WOW Rebecca! Your story made me think of our elderly neighbors when we were young. I enjoyed them so much and used to love to hear their stories about the Roaring 20’s. WOW good job! Nan
Thanks SO much Nan, I’m really glad you enjoyed it 🙂
